Analysis of micro elements

Mise en Scene
At the beginning of the scene the setting was dim, deserted work area. The lighting may represent the negative themes they are discussing or the mood in which these characters are in. The characters ethnicity were Greek and Israeli and their dress codes were mostly black clothing with black leather jackets which implied that they were working class. The Greek characters were dominating most of the frame and they were both sitting near the window which was shining on their face which highlights their importance authority. Another part of the scene involved he black community where they were all dressed very similarly grouping them together and uniting them which may imply that they are an outcast to society. The dress codes of the black characters used in this sequence were conforming to stereotypes of working class and no status. The Greek characters are seen in a Mercedes which again tells us the money and wealth they have. Their car was parked outside an urban area which juxtaposed with the environment they were in. The Israeli character is seen with a small machine gun which again conforms to stereotypes associating middle-eastern community with being terrorists.
Cinematography
Most of the shots were mid-shots and close-ups of the Greek and Israeli characters which showed there dominance and their control through out this sequence. However their were a lot of long shots of where the black community were set and showed their kind of environment that they live in.One of these long-shots showed the black community hanging on the streets creating trouble and miss-behaving which conformed to the stereotypes. Another interesting shot was an over the shoulder shot where we only saw the face of the Israeli character which puts interest and singles him out of the group he is in. when the scene switches there is a black antagonist who is very dominant and has a sense of superiority as he also has a henchman, this does not conform to the stereotypical representation of TV drama's. the use of the henchman is stereotypical as this implies that this antagonist is involved in something serious and dangerous that something may happen like a turf or gang war. the henchman has no dialogue and is in control from the black antagonist which subverts the stereotypes of men in TV drama's.
Editing
shot reverse shot was used when the two Greeks were talking showing the connection between them two, however there was a single shot of the Israeli which singled him out from the other two. Most of the scenes with the black antagonist was shared with a white protagonist which suggests the white dominance and superiority. There were few close-ups of the black antagonist only mid shots which tell the audience that what is also around him is significant and important.
Sound
The sound track at the beginning of the sequence was Greek or Israeli music which shows some sort of connection. However when he scene changed to the street which was dominated by the black community the music changed to a more urban, hip hop music which was used to juxtapose each other, comparing the music and culture between both communities. The black antagonist swore alot which again implies that he is not educated enough to use proper English language which conforms to the stereotypes of black men in TV drama's.

Sound and Editing

In this clip there is no sound-track as this is building to the climax and the silence emphasizes the importance of the dialogue which is used from the characters. In this sequence here is only diegetic sound and at the very beginning there is the sound of a loud buzzing noise which is a drill, the drill was seen piecing a hole which may hint to us that someone may be getting harmed or killed by a bullet or knife. The sound effects used is the bang of the bullet when the teenager gets shot. The sound also contributes to the mood of text and increases tension between two of the characters. There is a low angle of one of the antagonist showing his superiority which typical of TV dramas as this presents the character as being masculine and powerful. Another shot shows a high angle of a male character which is not typical of the representation of men, this shows him to be inferior and weak. Both male characters dominate the screen which again is typical of TV drama's. The dialogue is he major sound effect and will help represent the characters personality and mood he is in. The character with the gun is speaking very calm and seems to know what he is doing and the character who is threatened is scared and very nervous to what the killer may do. We can see from the close-up of his face that is frightened and about to cry because of the position he is in, which is not typical of the representation of men and subverts the stereotypes. Silence is used through out the sequence and is there to create tension and suspense between the two characters. The silence also emphasis the situation the victim is in. The use of gun also re enforcers the power of the male antagonist and the control he may have.
Editing
Editing is used in this sequence is continuity and in chronological order. This also helps keep the audience interested to see what will happen next. The is a lot of cuts used between the killer and the victim to again create tension and the cuts are slow which matches the mood of the cinematography and sound. Another important cut is where there is a close-up of the gun as the victim watches it which also show maximizes the situation he is in and exaggerates the size of the gun. The final important cut is where the other killer shoots the victim and the camera cuts to a high angle of them in the room which shows the emptiness of the room and hints to us that they may be outcasts. This also shows the male antagonist to being inferior and subverts stereotypes. There is an eye line match where we see from the killers view and the victims view to put he audience in the same situation as them.

Analysis of Mise en Scene and Cinematography

Mise En Scene
The sequence is filmed on location to make the atmosphere and mood seem more realistic. The Youths are outside of block of flats hinting that there lifestyle is represented in the drama. The use of props used are chess pieces which tell us that these youths have nothing better to do then sit round in the day time and play games. Two youth is sitting on a crate which again reinforces that none of the teenagers work or earn any sort of money. The space used in the sequence is very important as it establishes how deserted the area is because everyone else is working being daylight. This also shows us that they are isolated have no proper life. The lighting is significant because it again tells us that these teenagers are poor, not working or earning any money from any sort of job. The lighting established daylight making these youths negative and represented as loungers. This makes the scene seem very stereotypical of the black community. The atmosphere and mood is very calm and peaceful and natural making it realistic of daytime. The costume and make up gain is very important as it implies the personality of the teenagers. They are all wearing black coats which tells us that they maybe sinister and negatively portrayed in the drama. The audience see one youth wearing jeans which is casual clothing again reinforces youth and telling us that they do not work and that they maybe an outcast to society.
Cinematography
The sequence starts with an extreme long shot to reveal to the audience where this part of the drama is set. The extreme long is also used to show space around the protagonist or antagonist showing how deserted the area is, because of the time of day. A mid-shot is followed showing the characters appearances and facial expressions and the camera slowly turns half way around the character as he talking. The mid-shot is dominant which reflect the dominate use of male character in the scene. The mid-shots follow each character around the table making the audience feel involved in the conversation they are having. One shot is an over the shoulder shot making us feel like we are there and behind him. The use of males in the scene conforms to the conventions of TV drama as the are dominant thought out and no women is seen at all in any of the shots. Depth of field is used which is deep which at that point the background is important. Apart from the establishing long shot, all other shots are shallow focus which tells us that nothing in the background anymore is significant and exaggerated the importance of the teenage characters and the conversation they are having.

HEROES

Analysis of mise en scene

The setting is studio based designed as dark tunnel like area. The setting very realistic and makes the scene feel more involving for the audience. The props used is a gun which tells us that the series is obviously aimed at an audience range of 16-25 years because of the violence which may be used with the gun and other props. The characters ages are most likely to be 21-27 years which again appeals to that target range of audiences. Stereotypically the male gender are associated with liking action like films and sequences so this particular drama or scene is aimed at the male audience. However there is a female character within the scene which may appeal to the female audiences making the show gain a wider variety of viewers. The space used on the set is very empty and deserted creating a silent and almost intimating atmosphere and tense and suspenseful mood. The lighting in this sequence is very important. The lighting in the scene is natural which is dark making the mood tense because we do not know if someone or something will come out to shock the viewers which again is why it is aimed at older audiences. The setting is dark because of the mood and feeling of the characters, especially with the gun prop which creates a sinister feeling. The female character is wearing a red shirt which tells us that she is dangerous and could be violent because she possesses the gun. The male character has a dark blue or black shirt which tells the audience his character type and makes him seem more sinister. Both characters are wearing casual clothing which also tells us the age group which is represented and aimed at. The male character has a huge scar on his face which tells the audience he maybe a victim or he is dangerous and has a negative character type which is why the drama is aimed at older viewers.
