Analysis of Mise en Scene and Cinematography

Mise En Scene
The sequence is filmed on location to make the atmosphere and mood seem more realistic. The Youths are outside of block of flats hinting that there lifestyle is represented in the drama. The use of props used are chess pieces which tell us that these youths have nothing better to do then sit round in the day time and play games. Two youth is sitting on a crate which again reinforces that none of the teenagers work or earn any sort of money. The space used in the sequence is very important as it establishes how deserted the area is because everyone else is working being daylight. This also shows us that they are isolated have no proper life. The lighting is significant because it again tells us that these teenagers are poor, not working or earning any money from any sort of job. The lighting established daylight making these youths negative and represented as loungers. This makes the scene seem very stereotypical of the black community. The atmosphere and mood is very calm and peaceful and natural making it realistic of daytime. The costume and make up gain is very important as it implies the personality of the teenagers. They are all wearing black coats which tells us that they maybe sinister and negatively portrayed in the drama. The audience see one youth wearing jeans which is casual clothing again reinforces youth and telling us that they do not work and that they maybe an outcast to society.
Cinematography
The sequence starts with an extreme long shot to reveal to the audience where this part of the drama is set. The extreme long is also used to show space around the protagonist or antagonist showing how deserted the area is, because of the time of day. A mid-shot is followed showing the characters appearances and facial expressions and the camera slowly turns half way around the character as he talking. The mid-shot is dominant which reflect the dominate use of male character in the scene. The mid-shots follow each character around the table making the audience feel involved in the conversation they are having.One shot is an over the shoulder shot making us feel like we are there and behind him. The use of males in the scene conforms to the conventions of TV drama as the are dominant thought out and no women is seen at all in any of the shots. Depth of field is used which is deep which at that point the background is important. Apart from the establishing long shot, all other shots are shallow focus which tells us that nothing in the background anymore is significant and exaggerated the importance of the teenage characters and the conversation they are having.
